Oil Concentrate

“Which is the Best Fish Oil Concentrate?” – and other FAQs
It is now almost universally accepted that fish oil is tremendously beneficial for our health. However, with the wide variety of choices available, it becomes really difficult to choose the right fish oil concentrate. In this article we will see what are the most common questions people have related to fish oil supplements.
Is a fish oil concentrate as good as eating fish directly?
Surprisingly, taking a concentrate may be even better than eating fish directly.
Here’s why:
- To get the adequate quantity of Omega 3 fatty acids from the fish, you will need to eat large quantities of it daily. This wouldn’t be feasible for most people. It will also turn out be really expensive quickly. Taking a supplement daily, on the other hand, is really easy and provides good value for money too.
- The fish can contain impurities like Mercury and PCBs due to the polluted water where they were caught from. Fish oil on the other hand, is rigorously refined to remove all pollutants before making the capsule. This ensures you get only pure fish oil and nothing else.
How much fish oil do I need to take?
The optimal fish oil dosage is 2-3 grams a day, containing a mix heavy in DHA and a little less EPA. This translates into 2-3 gels a day of a fish oil supplement. Be aware that some supplements contain quite low quantities of DHA per capsule. They would then recommend to take more (4-6) capsules a day to get the right quantity of DHA inside the body.
Is an EPA centric supplement good?
Not really. You actually want your fish oil to be rich in DHA. Reason being, our body can convert DHA into EPA by a simple chemical reaction, but the reverse is not possible. You need to get DHA from outside sources only.
Why do I get an aftertaste of fish oil from my concentrate?
Actually, you shouldn’t. The aftertaste, or ‘repeat’, usually signifies that the fish used in preparing the oil was not fresh or not properly refined. That is why it is important that the source of fish and the manufacturing facility for fish oil be nearby. This will ensure that only fresh fish is processed and made into fish oil. A rigorous refining process like Molecular Distillation is also essential for producing high quality fish oil. Keep this in mind when you look for a fish oil concentrate.
So, go ahead and find a quality fish oil concentrate that fulfills these criteria. You just can’t go wrong with that.
